We don’t have bars or a movie theater (though you can find both in nearby Selfoss, if that’s your style). No, Eyrarbakki is a modest Icelandic town with real history. Here you can experience the real Iceland. You hear Icelandic on the streets and in the local shops, of which there are only two: a charming gift shop called Laugabúð, which remains much the way it was in the early 1900s, and the local convenience store at the fuel station, colloquially called ‘The Shop’ (Sjoppan). We are close to nature, being right on the south coast. When you step out the door you can hear the sound of the waves and smell the sea, even when you can’t see it. And if you want to see it, all you need to do is climb atop the seawall and take the walking path from one end of the town to the other.
Of course we here at Bakki Hostel & Apartments think that Eyrarbakki is the best place to stay in South Iceland. That’s why we live and work here and chose to build our hostel here! South Iceland has a lot to offer the intrepid traveler in terms of fantastic sights, and they are all easily accessible from Eyrarbakki. The town itself has a quiet charm and relaxed pace of life that you don’t find in Reykjavik or in nearby Selfoss. We don’t have much to offer in terms of nightlife, apart from a fantastic restaurant: Rauða Húsið, which means The Red House, has won the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for the last three years in a row! And it just happens to be walking distance from us… just like everything in this town. Discover Eyrarbakki has more information about the area.
